for the love of

reading

I read to think , unwind , and slow down . Here are some of the books I’ve read or am reading. The little snippets that I add are not intended to be an accurate review. It’s just a tidbit that impacted me.

Range

by David Epstein

Start: Mar. 3, 2025

Finish: April 7, 2025

Simon’s Index: 10

This book has done two things for me:

  1. Challenged my ideas about specialization.

  2. Reinforced my own experience of experimentation.

I am unsure how to distill my takeaways. This is the kind of book you read and mull over. It’s a mindful, chalk full of real, nuanced stories that make the concepts easy to understand and relatable. Depth and RANGE combine to make this an exceptional book. What else should I say?

Read it!

The Bomber Mafia

by Malcolm Gladwell

Start: Feb. 28, 2025

Finish: Mar. 3, 2025

Simon’s Index: 9

This book only took me 4 days. The reason? It’s a page turner that captivates and makes you think. It tells the story of general Curtis LeMay and general Haywood Hansell. Two very different men with two different moral compasses. One guided by principle, the other by results.

One of the lesser known World War 2 stories this book covers is the burning of Japan via bombers and napalm. Horrific. Probably more so than the deployment of the two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Fascinating read. I wish I would have read this book sooner.

Company of One

by Paul Jarvis

Start: ~Feb. 15 2025

Finish: Feb. 28, 2025

Simon’s Index: 8

A thought provoking read. It has challenged the notion that our business needs to grow to be sustainable. Better, yes. But not necessarily bigger. Focusing on quality and customer service are hallmarks of an excellent Company of One. This is a book I return to frequently in my mind while at the office.

I appreciate the stories and real life examples of many companies that are currently in business.

I found myself looking up many of these companies’ websites. This makes it more relatable.

Slow Productivity

by Cal Newport

Start: Feb. 1, 2025

Finish: ~Feb. 14, 2028

Simon’s Index: 7

Quality over quantity

Taking time to do things right rather than rushing from one project to the next.

Keeping sane rather than multitasking in desperation.
